A federal grand jury is demanding information about Mendocino County’s 9.31 medical marijuana zip tie program, including names of participants and the amount of money Mendocino County made from it. Local officials remain unclear as to the motivations behind issuing the subpoena. “Obviously we don’t want to turn over any info on anyone that may have negative consequences to the county or anyone involved in the 9.31 program,” 5th District Supervisor Dan Hamburg tells The Independent. County officials are weighing their options. The supervisors will meet in private session December 4 to discuss what information, if any, they could redact before meeting the subpoena’s close deadline. Official sources say the county will request a 30 day extension. Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman believes there’s nothing to fear: “All our meetings were in public. Last spring 2011, the District Attorney and I met with [US Attorney] Melinda Haag in Eureka and I went over the 9.31 program with her; she didn’t say stop. I informed her about the whole thing.” Allman, who helped craft the 9.31 program, tells The Independent he’s handed over the 9.31 documents to Mendocino County Counsel Tom Parker. “They’ll decide what goes and doesn’t go,” he says, [...]

Well, here comes November-no doubt most people reading this have the election on their minds. As some may recall, I’ve already made a prediction regarding this election. By using the natal charts of the two Presidential candidates and applying astrological techniques to determine their relative states of mind on the day after the election, I stand by my prediction that Mr. Obama will win the election. Another subject I’ve often mentioned is the Uranus-Pluto square. This aspect-creating a crisis in action in the struggle between conservatism and revolution-the Piscean Age and the new Aquarian Age- continues to be in force throughout the month. This aspect, lasting off and on until 2015, is the real source of the common perception that 2012 will be remembered as a “watershed” year-ending one era and beginning another. The first week November 1st-7th, except for Election Day might be rather quiet. But there are two disharmonious aspects to Venus, likely increasing the tension between the two sides-though they may also disrupt personal relationships somewhat due to Venus’s status as the Goddess of Love. The most important thing happening takes place on Election Day itself-when Mercury, ruler of communication goes retrograde, i.e. turns around and moves [...]

Who gets the most environmental money in Mendocino County? State Parks? The Sierra Club? No way. The Campbell Timber Company is our pick for the greatest taker of environmental funds in Mendocino County. The global logging firm also richly enjoys its position at the front of the trough of local public grant and land purchase funds. Pretty good work for the reincarnation of old GP, albeit now wearing a hippie wig. We have picked Campbell as our reigning “welfare queen” of Mendocino, just based on some amazing initial research. In recent years, Campbell sold (dumped) massive tracts of land ruined by timber logging to two “environmental” logging groups. The take from government and environmental allies by Campbell is just two of many, many transactions. $120 Million for the timber giant. And there is much, much more. The Skunk Sniffer would like to find a knowledgeable source to help us unravel the amazing array of influence; lobbying and especially public funding this company has its Paul Bunyan hands into. What we need is somebody with facts, not simply the universal Mendocino County ability to ejaculate opinion on any subject, with no need for facts. We will protect your name, but be [...]

A Ukiah Valley resident, Dennis O’Brien says his 1st amendment rights were violated when a sheriff’s deputy threatened to arrest him and a signature gatherer at the Ukiah Crossroads Shopping Center, outside Raley’s Supermarket. “The woman asked me if I would like to sign some ballot petitions. I said I would,” writes a O’Brien in a complaint filed with Mendocino County Counsel. According to O’Brien, the woman had at least 3 petitions for ballot measures aimed at the November election; he signed two of them. But, before he could sign the third one, a sheriff detective showed up and ordered them to leave. “The woman stated what she was doing and said she was just exercising her free speech rights. Detective [Andrew] Whitaker stated that she was on private property, and that the store manager had requested that she leave,” states a letter from O’Brien. “I then stated that the Supreme Court had held that a shopping center was the equivalent of a town square, and that it could be used for gathering signatures for political purposes,” But O’Brien alleges Whitaker replied that he was enforcing private property laws. “Detective Whitaker then [...]

Mendocino County Sheriff Captain Randy Johnson is under investigation following a federal raid on his father’s property, where an estimated 400-500 marijuana plants were confiscated. Johnson owns property next to his fathers. During harvest, it must be hard to not notice the skunky aroma 500 marijuana plants exhude. Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman referred the investigation to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, to avoid a conflict of interest. Allman appointed Johnson to oversee the county’s 99 marijuana plant regulation, the 9.31 ordinance in 2010. But earlier this year, federal authorities threatened county officials with potential legal action if the program was not disbanded. Johnson declined to comment whether the raid was politically motivated. But sources inside Mendocino County politics say it’s possible. Its widely known Sheriff Deputies largely disliked Sheriff Allman’s 99 plant, 9.31 ordinance. One county official told The Independent, it could have been a disgruntled sheriff or former employee who tipped off federal authorities about Johnson’s family pot farm. But to what extent, if at all, Johnson was involved in the grow is under investigation and will be determined by the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. Because Johnson was a former employee of the Ukiah Police Department, asking them [...]

A jury convicted Billy Norbury of first degree murder in the shooting of his Redwood Valley neighbor, Jamal Andrews, back on January 24, 2012. The jury also found that Norbury used a gun, adding another 25 years to the 25 year sentence for the murder. Under the current verdict, Norbury, who is 33 years old, will be 83 before he is first eligible to apply for parole. However, a second part of the trial is underway to determine if Norbury was insane at the time of the killing. Should the jury find Norbury not guilty by reason of insanity, there is no telling how long he will be institutionalized and when he may become an outpatient. Once the verdict is in on the insanity plea, Judge John Benke will decide on the sentencing, which could take a month or more. Leading up to the crime, Norbury rode his ATV to Andrews’ house twice. The first time, it was to call the victim outside – referring to him as “Jamar.” Norbury used the wrong name; he didn’t actually know Jamal Andrews. The second uninvited visit, again on the ATV, was to apologize for the first intrusion. Norbury said he hadn’t meant [...]

He was spending more time away from the squat getting spun out with the boys we ran with-his best friend Trash, and lofty side kick Fitz.
Trash was a man unto himself; a mystery to me. A triple Gemini, comic book artist, with dark hair, he embodied the punk rock allure-part goth, with a studded leather, clad in spikes and metal cones, and his own art work drawn on the back. With his black and red Mohawk, and a touch of an ‘I don’t give a fuck’ attitude, he was one of the most gorgeous men I ever laid eyes on. Fitz was a few years older than I, an artist too, tall, lanky with big brown eyes, and short wirey hair-not quite dreaded-but almost. He read Allen Ginsberg poems and drew twisted pictures of people as I panhandled for beer money. A white boy, who once lived in the barrio of the East Side ventured to the seedy side of our city and soon enough he was tweeked out on meth like the [...]

A bald, middle aged junkie, fresh off heroin, seeking another kind of fix—the kind of heroine to save him from himself, and I said, “No, let’s take it slow…” I wanted to see this fallen man rise on his own-to prove himself worthy. Besides, from days gone by, I couldn’t forget the betrayal, as our legs crossed one another’s path. Arms intertwined, holding, rocking, hands groping, grabbing, touching, slapping, scratching, soothing, souls colliding in the blissful madness called love. Endless. I still spread my legs, despite all the pain of years past. I bared my soul, open, vulnerable. We had a lot of catching up to do, and we did…we did. Each moment he swelled into my heart. Like a junkie, I was smacked out on him. And like a good drug, the kind you will fiend over, the kind you will die over, the kind you kill for—the come down was hard. <itunes:summary>Comedian and presidential candidate, Roseanne Barr campaigned on a pro cannabis platform at Oaksterdam University in Oakland, Ca, the state's premier cannabis college. Her fiery, 8 minute speech touched social commentary and tragic comedy about life in America, and focused on the war on drugs.

Barr, who is running for president on the Peace and Freedom Party's ticket with “Peace Mom” Cindy Sheehan as Vice President, called the war on marijuana, a class war on drugs.

“[The war on drugs] is waged by rich people on prescription drugs against poor people on street drugs,” Barr said.

And the irony, according to Barr is that taxpayers foot the bill.

“Many of whom smoke pot. Locking up your own tax base is simply stupid!” she said.

The usual, funky and diverse Oaksterdam crowd packed the university to rally behind the comedian. Straight laced working class people, dread-headed rastas, hip hop artists, yellow haired punks, queers and everyone else in between who loves cannabis, hollered with enthusiasm for her presidential bid-hungry for inspiration. “Teach!” shouted a man in the crowd.

Despite her pro cannabis platform, the undertones of Barr's speech largely addressed class disparity in America. Barr's analysis of the war on drugs connected the dots to the prison industry, racism, corporate exploitation, and war, which largely impacts people of color, the poor, and working class Americans.

Stating 98% of paint in the U.S. is manufactured in prisons, Barr coined prisons “America's new manufacturing base”, which is largely populated by pot smokers.

“6 in 10 prisoners in jail are in there due to marijuana,” she said.

Supporters in the room could relate. Ganja Guru, and 1 time marijuana convict, Ed Rosenthal attended the campaign to endorse Barr.

“I'll never vote for anyone who wants to put me in jail,” said the cannabis advocate who was arrested by federal authorities in 2002 for cultivation.

Barr's appearance was on the heels of a federal raid on a predominantly Latino neighborhood in Santa Rosa, Ca, where authorities in military gear allegedly confiscated over 1,150 marijuana plants and claimed the grows were gang related, which residents deny according to KPFA radio producer, Jose Guiterrez, who said he visited the area after the raid.

“They wouldn't do that in Piedmont, Ca...but they did it in a Latino neighborhood because they can get away with it,” he said.

Ending the war on drugs will also legalize hemp, save the economy, and “our asses” according to Barr.

“If they would let me grow hemp, which they won't because its not a free country...I could employ thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of Americans,” she said.

Hemp can be used to make fuel, food, clothes, and paper. The crop has a 2 year grow and harvest cycle, which is “way ahead of other crop yields,” said Barr, who farms nuts in Hawaii.

Barr, who played Connie Cancer in the movie, “What if Cannabis Cured Cancer,” also said ending the war on drugs will help make a healthier society.

“[Cannabis] helps cure cancer and PTSD and dam near every other ailment to mankind,” she said.

What next, world peace? Since marijuana is the ultimate weapon against mind control, according to presidential hopeful, Barr, and all you want to do is laugh and eat when you're high, legalizing cannabis might make world peace possible too, if Roseanne Barr leads the way.

Prosecution and Defense locked horns in court, in the trial of Billy Norbury for the murder of Jamal Andrews in Redwood Valley early this year. At issue is the admission of expert witness testimony about the mental state of defendant Norbury. Defense attorney Al Kubanis wants to enter a report from mental health professional John Podboy, which is favorable to his client. District Attorney David Eyster is raising objections based on contact that Kubanis has already had with Podboy about the case. Eyster believes there is already a consultant relationship between Kubanis and Podboy which would skew the testimony. Kubanis admits to giving some information to Podboy but doubts that it was enough to bias the report. Judge John Benke cleared the courtroom so that the attorneys could speak privately with the judge – and discuss sensitive material that could threaten jury selection if the conversation were in public. When court resumed Judge Benke said that he would reflect on the issues and have a decision about the mental health status reports on August 21st. Once again, the court proceedings were marked by obvious antagonism between the D.A. and the Defense Attorney. Kubanis wanted the court to require that certain [...]
