The Mendocino Country Independent is a multimedia community news outlet. We are a community media website, a monthly print publication, and a weekly radio news program for the Mendocino County region of California.
We cover issues of interest to our rural, coastal and progressive community, from muckraking news to art, culture and health. The Mendocino Country Independent is published in color once a month and our online website is updated weekly with news from around our region. Our weekly radio show is broadcast Mondays 5pm-6pm live on KMEC 105.1 LPFM in Ukiah, Ca and rebroadcast Fridays 9am-10am on KYBU 96.9 FM in Covelo, Ca.
Christina Aanestad is the publisher, host and editor. Founded by the late Richard Johnson, founder of the local Green Party and all around community muckraker and activist, Johnson left Aanestad and Annie Esposito 3 of his 4 papers: The Mendocino Country Independent, Vistas, and Confluence. Together, the 2 community media makers conjoined the 3 papers into a monthly publication of news, art and culture. The Independent has a ‘Vistas‘ section of art and culture and a ‘Confluence‘ section of heath and spirituality.
After 1 year of co-publishing “The Independent,” Annie Esposito left the paper to Aanestad to carry on the torch as she began to reignite Johnson’s 4th paper, El Sol, the first Spanish language paper for the Latino community in Mendocino County. Esposito is joined by Angelina Sophia and Zezzy Chirre in making El Sol the first bilingual paper in the region.
